El Oso Blanco Auto

Yesterday, a package arrived at my house that I initially thought was a trade package.  Instead, when I opened it up, I saw that it was a card I had won on an ebay auction some time ago.  I had forgotten all about it, so it was a nice surprise.

It is a 2014 Panini Prizm autograph of Evan Gattis.

#37, Evan Gattis

I am both happy and disappointed with this card.  I am happy that I own a Gattis auto, as he is my favorite current catcher, yet this is a terrible card.  I can get over the sticker, and Panini not having an MLB license doesn’t bother me.  What does bother me is the atrocious signature provided by Gattis.

I remember reading an article a while back that focused on Mike Schmidt being upset about the quality of signatures provided by recent players.  At the time, I didn’t understand his problem.  However, I now can at least understand his grievance.

I love Gattis and am glad that I have this card, even though it is a horrible signature.  But then again, what else do you expect from a Bear?

Franmil Reyes, a Padres prospect, has without a doubt the worst autograph I’ve ever seen. He’s got an auto in this year’s Bowman Chrome set that I wouldn’t keep if it was given to me.

I feel exactly the same regarding JD Martinez and Jose Altuve signatures. If there were no picture with the auto, we’d be clueless to figure it out.
