The day has finally arrived; the World Series starts tonight, which means that I need to make my final pick. First, though, let’s review my picks so far:
A’s vs. Royals: I picked the A’s
Pirates vs. Giants: I picked the Giants
Tigers vs. Orioles: I picked the Tigers
Cardinals vs. Dodgers: I picked Cardinals
Angels vs. Royals: I picked the Angels
Nationals vs. Giants: I picked the Giants
Giants vs. Cardinals: I picked the Giants
Orioles vs. Royals: I picked the Royals
5 out of 8 isn’t great, but it is better than the analysts who get paid to pick the winners. Add to that the fact that I was 2 for 2 in picking the winners of the League Championship series, and we can see that I am getting better. Throughout the playoffs two things have become apparent: I have picked the winner in every National League Series, and Buster Posey has been a lock.
Going all the way back to the Wildcard game against the Pirates, who I wanted to win, Posey representing the Giants has been magic. I previously listed the rules and reasons as to why I picked Posey. It seems like I tapped into something even before the baseball writers, like Jayson Stark did in his recent article.
Darrell Porter, on the other hand, has been a surprise, just like the Royals. It is fitting that someone with the qualifications like Porter, would represent a team like the Royals: gritty, determined, old-fashioned baseball.
These Face(mask) off posts have not only shown how amazing Posey is, they have also demonstrated the importance of catchers in general. There was a great article written for Grantland that talks about the importance of Posey and Perez. (Apparently paid writers actually use current players for their analysis. Silly writers.)
So now we come to it, the decision that will decide the outcome of the 2014 World Series. Before I make my pick, I want to just take one more look at these two catchers:
Is there really any question as to who wins this contest? I want the Royals to win, but the catcher representing them looks like a ’70s Science teacher. Posey is just too dominate to be overshadowed by Mr. Porter, room 3B.
2014 World Series Winner: Buster Posey’s Giants
