I am in awe of the generosity of the blogging community. I can think of no other group of people who blindly give away collectibles, often valuable collectibles. Sometimes these collectibles are given away just because someone is generous and wants someone else to enjoy them, and sometimes someone sends cards in hopes of trading, which has just happened to me. Marcus, who writes a great blog, called all the way to the backstop, contacted me a few days ago, hoping to trade with me. Yesterday, a package arrived that was full of great cards. Check out how generous this guy is.
Here are just some of the numerous catchers that Marcus sent my way. I watched a lot of Sesame Street as a kid, so I guess I wanted to play “One of these things is not like the other.” I couldn’t help but include that Terry Kennedy card. The look on his face, his catcher’s gear, and the fact that he is sitting in the dugout make this card stand out. The other three are great images of catchers. I don’t know if I have ever noticed a card of catcher warming up a pitcher in the bullpen, but that is what John Buck is doing.
These were such a wonderful addition to the trade package that I had to include them. While I am not familiar with any of these players, I appreciate the inclusion of the minor league catchers. The Round Rock Express is the Triple-A affiliate for the Texas Rangers. Certainly, one of these three is bound to make a splash in the majors.
Marcus included some shiny stuff as well. I have not been overly fond of this year’s Topps releases, though the Chrome cards, by far, look the best. The Carlos Ruiz card is a refractor and looks great in person. Not only is it a strong image, but the X-Fractor finish works nicely with the colors.
Johnny Bench and Buster Posey cards are quickly becoming some of my favorites. I love the retro look of the Bench Heritage card. I will reserve my comments about Posey till my next Face(mask) off post, but this is a great card nonetheless.
Marcus included these two Red Sox cards. Youkilis was a favored player until he jumped ship for the Yankees. Pedro, on the hand, is one of my favorite pitchers of all-time. Both of these cards will make their way into my collection.
Shiny purple Reds were included in the stack of cards. These are gorgeous cards. Votto is a machine, and while Bailey and Reds had a disappointing season, I have high expectations for next year.
This is the first Reds auto I have acquired and the first auto I have received in a trade package. Marcus, your generosity is unrivaled. I know Prizm isn’t high on a lot of people’s list, but I like these cards. I’m a sucker for shiny.
This is by far my favorite card from Marcus. I am beginning to have a fondness for Commemorative Patches. I will never have a Babe Ruth relic, so this is the best I can hope for. The fact that Ruth is wearing his Red Sox uniform makes this card even better.
Marcus, thanks again brother.
