2004 Fleer Greats of the Game- Bernie Carbo Auto

The more cards from the 2004 Fleer Greats of the Game I get, the more I want.  Recently, I purchased my first auto from this set.  I was searching ebay for singles and came across  this card.  I made an offer, and almost immediately it was accepted.  A week later, I had it in my collection of Red Sox autos.

#GBA-BC, Bernie Carbo

I love this card.  Carbo’s signature isn’t the best looking, but it better than most recent players’ signatures.  While it is an on-card auto, for the $5 (free shipping) I paid, it was well worth it.

Carbo’s career was hampered by drugs, injuries, and poor judgement.  However, there were times when his talent was able to shine through, like in Game 6 of the 1975 World Series.  Most people remember that game for Fisk’s home run.  However, if it had not been for Carbo’s pinch hit home run, Fisk never would have had his chance at immortality.  In the bottom of the 8th inning, with 2 out and 2 on, Carbo hit a game-tying 3-run pinch-hit home run.  For that swing alone, he belongs in my collection.

Really nice card, especially for the price. I’ve got quite a few Red Sox autographs but no Carbo yet.
