I have picked up my second card from the 2012 Panini Cooperstown insert, Field Generals. I can’t say enough great things about this insert, so I will just show the card.
#8, Rick Ferrell
Again, there is nothing negative to say about this card. Because Ferrell is shown wearing his chest pad, the name on the jersey is covered, which doesn’t require awkward air-brushing. The hat is missing a logo, though it isn’t as glaring an omission as more recent players. I love the pose chosen for this card, and I don’t normally like posed images.
Ferrell, while not as celebrated as some of the other Hall of Fame catchers, was a tremendous defensive backstop. An 8x All-Star, Ferrell held the record for the most games caught by an American League catcher, for 41 years. While playing for the St. Louis Browns (Baltimore Orioles), Red Sox, Washington Senators (Minnesota Twins), Ferrell caught an amazing 1,806 games.
Little known fact: Ferrell only hit 28 home runs in his career. His brother, Wes Ferrell, had 38 home runs in his career. The kicker: Wes was a pitcher.
Thanks to this set, I have another great card of an amazing catcher. I now have 2 of 10 cards from this set.
